Samsung has just revealed its first-ever NVMe-based portable SSD – the Portable SSD X5. Targeted at the pros and content creators, the scorcher of a drive reads at up to 2,800MB/s and writes at 2,300MB/s (2,100MB/s for 500GB model).
Combined with 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3, you can transfer a 20GB file in just 12 seconds. Thunderbolt 3 is four times faster than USB 3.1. With read speeds of 2,800MB/s, the X5 is 5.2X faster than SATA-based SSDs.
These speeds will come in handy for content creators who work on 4K video files and high-resolution photos. The X5 is designed for Macs and PCs with Thunderbolt 3 ports, and does not work with regular USB 3.1.
The pocketable drive weighs just 150g and has a supercar-inspired full-metal design. It features a shock-resistant interior frame that can survive accidental drops of up to 2m. It has Dynamic Thermal Guard technology and a heat sink to safeguard it from overheating. It also features data protection with AES 256-bit hardware encryption.
;The X5 goes on sale starting 3 September and retails for USD400 (500GB), USD700 (1TB) and USD1,400 (2TB).
Each drive carries a three-year limited warranty.
