100 years is a long time. That’s 10 decades. A total of 36,500 days. On September 10, 2012, PETRONAS Lubricants International (PLI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil corporation of Malaysia, celebrated its 100 years of operation. To commemorate this key milestone, PLI kicked off the world’s first online digital fluid art platform called Fluid Art Movement.

First a primer. Many may not know or have heard of PLI. PLI is the union of two high respected lubricant and functional fluids companies in the world – FL Selenia and PETRONAS’ own lubricant unit. In the early years, FL was established as part of FIAT‘s lubricant division, catered for all FIAT vehicles.

To make a long story short, PETRONAS acquired FL Selenia in 2008 and as a result PETRONAS consolidated all its lubricant businesses into a new entity called PETRONAS Lubricants International or PLI. Aldino Bellazzini, former CEO of FL Selenia became the first CEO of PLI. At its birth, PLI was already a top 20 lubricant player in the world with estimated sales volume of 650 million litres a year. PLI is committed to its role as a Fluid Technology Solutions company for today and tomorrow.

Being an active player in motor racing, both local, regional and at the world’s highest level, PETRONAS lubricants powers the teams that it sponsors including the winning Lexus Team TOM’s at the Japan GT Championship, Formula Nippon and Formula 3 as well as the victorious BMW Z4M PETRONAS Syntium Team in the Super Taikyu Series. PETRONAS is also the Official Partner to the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team.

Closer to our regular daily lives, we tend to take much things for granted. Lubricants and functional fluids included. These are the fluids that power our cars, machines and more. These very functional fluids and lubricants help power human progress. In the world we live in today, little do we realise the vital part lubricating capabilities of fluids play in the modernisation and industrialisation. For over a century, PLI has been innovating fluids an consistently improving formulas, blends and breakthroughs in fuel advancement.

To commemorate the ‘Century of Fluids Innovation’, PLI is inviting everyone to give fluids the recognition they deserve by being creative through Fluid Art Movement. Fire up the virtual canvas at www.fluidartmovement.com and make a colourful splash of fluids.

For your creative efforts, you and a partner could just end up in Montreal to watch the 2013 Formula 1 Canada Grand Prix on an all-expense-paid trip.

Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg took the honours to roll out the first two art pieces.
