The Movement Control Order (MCO), in effect since 18 March to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, has significantly impacted people’s lives, businesses, and the economy at large. On the flip side, Malaysian has also seen increased use of digital platforms and e-commerce, one of the positive outcomes in these challenging times. The MCO and COVID-19, in one fail swoop, have accelerated fundamental and long-term shift in consumer behaviour and interactions on domestic and global levels.

That said, it is imperative for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to adapt and change—to better address this shift. This is not simply only to mitigate the immediate impact of COVID-19 but also gear themselves for the future.

Recognising this, the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is hosting its first and largest e-Dagang Expo (eDX), which will run from 4 May until 8 May 2020.

This inaugural, nationwide initiative is a timely response to prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s recent statement that the government wants to speed up digitalisation to address the new normal.

MDEC says the five-day virtual event aims to engage 500,000 micro-sellers, local businesses, and exporters on the benefits of e-commerce.

eDX will offer free webinars and panellist sessions on tips and tricks to succeed in e-commerce, growing beyond borders, as well as share inspirational success stories. Geared to take businesses offline to online and onwards to export, the sessions will be headlined by MDEC’s e-commerce partners such as Shopee, Lazada, Carousell, Alibaba, BliBli, and eBay.

Attendees will have the chance to learn how to set up an online store using easy everyday tools; listing their products on e-marketplaces; growing their sales nationwide and globally; and more.

The virtual expo seeks to empower SMEs and aspiring business owners of all sizes. Additionally, attendees can enjoy discounts offered by participating e-commerce providers via fire sales.

MDEC’s Go-eCommerce is an online entrepreneurial platform with the tools to help companies take their businesses to the next level. Businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs can learn everything from business and financial management to search engine optimisation, from copywriting to email marketing, and more.
