Shot on Honor 8X: Through the lens of honor’s new mid-ranger

The stunning Honor 8X will officially launch in Malaysia today, after making a debut in its homeland China last month. The device is a mid-ranger with an ultra-accessible price tag (sub-MYR1,000 expected), but honor as honor does, the device is packed with goodness and boasts an incredible build too. I’ve had the chance to play around with a unit for about two weeks, so I thought I’d give you taste of one of its strengths – the camera.

Before I show you some sample shots, let me give you a quick summary, in one short paragraph, of the honor 8X’s specs. First up, it’s powered by the octa-core Kirin 710, Huawei’s new mid-range chipset that’s coupled with 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. It’s got a massive 6.5-inch FHD+ “FullView 2.0” display (2340×1080) with a 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio that’s TUV certified, a world’s first. Align with current trends, the display features a notch. It features a massive 3,750mAh battery that charges up conventionally via microUSB. It runs EMUI 5.2, based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Honor 8XNow that that’s done and dusted. Let’s touch on the cameras. On the rear, you’ll find a 20MP f/1.8 + 2MP (depth) dual-lens camera system. The front gets a 16MP f/2.0 single shooter. Both camera systems are boosted by AI capabilities – from screen and object recognition to AI image stabilisation(AIS).

Honor 8XAIS is nifty and makes the amazing Night Mode possible, a feature ported from the Huawei P20 Pro. Night Mode, by the way, is mind-blowing. As seen on the Huawei P20 Pro, it captures multiple shots at multiple exposures of a low-light scene over six seconds, and through some tech wizardry combines them into a single, extremely well-exposed photo. Technically, it’s similar to how HDR works, only it’s done over a period of time. You have to see it to believe it, because it’s really that good.

Honor 8XIn terms of the camera experience, it will be familiar to those already using Honor or Huawei devices and mode carousel will be familiar to iOS users as well. Autofocus is pretty snappy, even in low-light.

While I get a first impressions and proper review going, here are some sample shots taken from the Honor 8X. All photos are straight from camera, unedited, aside from being watermarked.

Don’t forget to catch the Honor 8X Launch Livestream at 2.30PM today and stand a chance to win a unit.
