Yes, one of the most advanced 4G networks in the world, has forged a collaboration with national carmaker PROTON which will introduce the first 4G internet-enabled cars in Malaysia. PROTON will join the likes of world-class car brands like Ford, BMW and Daimler that offer internet connectivity in vehicles. Internet connectivity enables drivers and passengers to access emails, update social networks, locate favorite restaurants or find the nearest ATM. The possibilities are endless. Yes 4G internet connectivity will be standard feature on all new PROTON models, starting with the P3-21A, PROTON’s up-and-coming new sedan based on its PROTON Tuah concept.

The PROTON Tuah concept was first previewed at Kuala Lumpur International Motorshow (KLIMS) 2010. The P3-21A, is rumored to be powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, or a 1.8/2.0-litre NA engine. It is reported to have class-leading 5-star NCAP safety rating and export quality specs. The sedan is expected to be launched next month.

YTL Communications’ Yes 4G has quickly expanded its reach and network since its launch 2 years ago. The 4G network now covers over 65% of Malaysia’s most populated areas and is expected to reach over 80% by end of the year. With over 2,500 base stations already in place, Yes plans to add another 1,500 base stations to support its expansion plans. Yes is the only wireless network operator in the country to offer seamless 4G connectivity along the full 960km stretch of the North-South Expressway and a large portion of the East-Coast Expressway.

PROTON and Yes plans to add smart applications like remote real-time vehicle diagnostics, security and location-based services to enhance the driving experience in the future.

It’s certainly a milestone for our national car maker and the young telco, and I think this will spur other car makes to jump on the bandwagon soon. While some of you may express concern over driver safety, just as mobile phone and GPS device use is concerned, active use of smart applications should be by passengers, not drivers.
