Xiaomi in Beijing today, unveiled the new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, two ultra-affordable devices that boast a “Full View” display. After kickstarting the trend for edge-to-edge 18:9 screen ratio displays with the Starck-designed Mi Mix, the China phone maker is bringing “Full View” to the masses.
The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are pretty much identical, and both feature a signature Redmi design. The Redmi 5 packs a 5.7-inch display (1440×720), while the Redmi 5 Plus offers a larger 5.9-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) display.
The Redmi 5 gets the services of the Snapdragon 450 processor, mated to 2GB RAM + 16GB storage or 3GB RAM + 32GB of storage.
The Redmi 5 Plus, on the other hand, packs a 14nm octa-core Snapdragon 625 chip with either a 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, or a high-spec 4GB RAM + 64GB storage option.
In terms of battery, the Redmi 5 get a built-in 3,300mAh unit, while its bigger sibling packs a large 4,000mAh unit.
At the launch, Xiaomi did not reveal details regarding the device camera specs, but according to its TENAA listing, both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus feature a 12MP main shooter, and a 5MP selfie shooter. The selfie shooter also includes a front-facing LED flash.
Xiaomi says both devices have reinforced structure at the corners to reduce to chance of a broken screen. It has also applied a waterproof layer on the earpiece to protect it from sweat and dust.
Pricing and availability
The Redmi 5 is priced at CNY799 (MYR494) for 2GB RAM + 16GB storage, while the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage version costs CNY899 (MYR555).
The bigger Redmi 5 Plus is priced at CNY999 (MYR617) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage version, and CNY1,299 (MYR803) for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant.
Sales in China will kick off on 12.12 on Xiaomi’s official stores at Tmall and JD.com.
