Some iPhone X displays are hit with “Green Line of Death”

A small fraction of iPhone X users is reporting a mysterious vertical green line that is appearing on the phone’s display. The anomaly has been labelled “Green Line of Death” although one user Nate Heagy has suggested “GreenGate.”

It looks like mobile OLED displays are off to a little bit of a rough start. The Google Pixel 2 XL has been having its own OLED issues, with users reporting burn-in, and desaturated colours. The OLED on the new Pixel 2 XL is made by LG.

TechCrunch has explained that the Samsung-made iPhone X display has a new diamond sub-pixel pattern in the OLED panel. Green sub-pixels appear in lines, while red and blue alternate.

An electrical fault may be causing voltage to flow to all the green sub-pixels in a line.

Several users have posted photos of the “green line of death” on Twitter including mix0mat0sis, and Christian Roman.

Apple has kept mum about the issue, although affected iPhone owners are hitting the Apple support forums and social media with their complaints.

Perhaps it’s only affecting a minute percentage of users hence Apple isn’t officially responding yet. Several users have been able to swap faulty phones for free at the local Apple Store though, so there’s no need to panic.

As a quick recap, the iPhone X features an all-new glass-metal design with an all-screen 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display, cutting-edge TrueDepth camera with FaceID, powerful A11 Bionic chip, incredible 12MP dual cameras, wireless charging, just to name a few. It runs the latest iOS 11 out-of-the-box.

DisplayMate has said that the iPhone X has the best all round display it has ever tested.

Apple’s most anticipated smartphone of the year, the iPhone X will be available starting 24 November 2017, with pre-orders kicking off on 17 November.
