Qualcomm Snapdragon 636: 40% faster, support for ultra-wide displays

Qualcomm has announced its new Snapdragon 636 chipset, designed to provide improvements in display performance, enhanced gaming and display technology support. The new mid-range chip is slated to ship in November 2017.

The new chipset promises to carry on the company’s heritage of delivering strong performance in the Snapdragon mobile platforms, catering to users who demand high performance, high quality with top-level features at a lower price point.

Snapdragon 636 features the octa-core Qualcomm Kryo 260 CPU, which delivers an increase of 40 percent in device performance compared to the Snapdragon 630.

There’s also added support for modern ultra-wide FHD displays as well as a Assertive Display. These two combined optimizes the visibility of the display in all lighting conditions.

Qualcomm’s TruPalette and EcoPix features are also integrated in the Adreno Visual Processing Subsystem to support better viewing experiences.

Finally, the integrated Qualcomm Adreno 509 GPU has been designed to boost gaming and browsing performance up by 10 percent as opposed to the previous generation. It supports a heightened gaming experience with life-like visuals and efficient rendering of the advanced 3D gaming graphics.

The Snapdragon 636 mobile platform uses a 14nm FinFet process and is pin and software-compatible with the Snapdragon 660 and 630 mobile platforms. It allows original equipment manufacturers (OEM) which are already using Snapdragon platforms to adapt to the Snapdragon 636 to their device lineups.

The new chip platform supports memory up to 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.

It features the Snapdragon X12 LTE modem, with peak downloads up to 600Mbps that enables operators to provide lightning download speeds to consumers. It supports LTE Cat.13 (uplink) and LTE Cat.12 (downlink).

The 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP supports capture up to 24MP with zero shutter lag while supporting smooth zoom, fast autofocus and true-to-life colors for impeccable image quality.

Also, the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec supports Hi-Fi audio on the go, with up to 192kHz/24bit support as well as the ability to playback lossless audio files with low distortion and high dynamic range.

The Snapdragon 636 mobile platform is expected to ship to customers in November 2017.
