Adobe Lightroom Mobile gets a handy update, for both Android (v2.3) and iOS (v2.7) platforms, bringing a new HDR capture mode to today’s powerful smartphones.

The new HDR mode works by automatically scanning a scene to determine the correct exposure. It then captures three DNG files which are automatically aligned, merged, de-ghosted, and tone-mapped in the app.

And it isn’t some downsized DNG version, you actually get a 16-bit floating point DNG with all the benefits of HDR and a raw photo. You’ll find the same algorithms, with the same quality as the HDR technology built into Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.

Now you won’t need a DSLR or mirrorless camera to capture HDR raw files. You can do it right from your smartphone.

Check out Adobe’s Principal Designer/Evangelist Russell Preston Brown’s tutorial on this new HDR capture mode within Lightroom Mobile.

In addition to the new raw HDR capture mode, iOS users also get the ability to “Export Original,” including DNGs captured in the camera as well as imported raw files through LIghtoom Mobile and Lightroom web.

Adobe has also added gestures to rate and review in “Rate & Review” mode. There’s also a new Force Touch and Notification Center widget.

For Android Creative Cloud members, the Radial and Linear selection tools are now available.
