[CES 2017] Lenovo innovates different with new portables, gaming sub-brand, smart assistant, and smartphone AR/VR

CES2017 Lenovo

In true blue Lenovo style, the leading PC (and post-PC) brand kicked off CES 2017 with a plethora of new products to demonstrate “different innovates better.” With its continued focus on innovation and product design, Lenovo rolled out the latest ThinkPad X1 family; Miix 720 2-in-1; new gaming sub-brand Lenovo Legion; and Lenovo Smart Assistant with Amazon Alexa. Additionally, it also introduced the Lenovo Smart Storage and Lenovo 500 Multimedia Controller; and smartphone AR and VR experiences with Lenovo Phab 2 Pro apps.

New ThinkPad X1 family: Still the ultimate sexy workhorse

The new ThinkPad X1 family is headlined by none other than the 2017 ThinkPad X1 Carbon. If good looks, performance and technical superiority are your thing, then the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the perfect choice.

Available in classic ThinkPad Black and now a new Silver colour, it’s the lightest 14-inch business notebook. It weighs just 1.2kg and packs a 14-inch IPS display (up to 2K resolution) that fits into a 13-inch form factor.

It keeps you working for up to 15 hours (remember to take breaks every 30 minutes), and connectivity options will keep you ‘always on.’ About that… there’s Thunderbolt 3 ports, LTE-A Wireless WAN and WiFi Certified WiGig options.

A ThinkPad being a ThinkPad is built around security. There’s a fingerprint sensor with a dedicated chip to handle biometric processing. It works hand in hand with Windows Hello to enable safe, secure facial authentication.

Under the hood, it packs 7th Generation Intel Core (“Kaby Lake”) i7 processors (up to Intel Core vPro i7-7600U). This is mated to up to 16GB of 1866MHz LPDDR3 RAM and 1TB of PCIe storage.

For those looking for flexibility, the updated ThinkPad X1 Yoga is now available in a new metallic silver. The 14-inch versatile notebook features an OLED screen that gives you stunning colours and super blacks.

Next up, the ThinkPad X1 Tablet, also Intel Kaby Lake-powered (“Y Series”). It is lightweight, flexible and offers up to hours of additional battery life and an integrated projector option.

Miix 720: Mix with the best, die like the rest

The Microsoft Surface Pro may just have met its match. The Miix 720 detachable Windows notebook is chic, portable and powerful.

It boasts a crisp 12-inch QHD+ display, and a precision touchpad-enabled keyboard. Under the hood, it is powered by a 7th Generation Intel Core i7 and features Thunderbolt 3.

The Miix 720 can be extended to use the Lenovo Active Pen 2 for notes and digital illustration.

An integrated infrared camera is the perfect match for Windows Hello. And the unique tablet kickstand gives you adaptability in terms of viewing angle.

Welcome, Lenovo Legion

Unexpectedly, Lenovo has introduced a new gaming sub-brand – Lenovo Legion. Debuting under the new brand are the Lenovo Legion Y720 and Lenovo Legion Y520 notebooks.

The edgy-designed, powerful gaming notebooks pack the latest 7th Gen Intel Core i7 processors and NVIDIA graphics for the best VR experience.

They also feature up to UHD (3840×2160) IPS anti-glare displays. The duo also happen to be the world’s first Dolby Atmos Windows-based PC.

There’s optional RGB and red backlit keyboard too, as well as optional integrated Xbox One Wireless receiver.

Home gets smarter

Looking a lot like the Amazon Echo is the Lenovo Smart Assistant. Which isn’t a surprise because it was built in collaboration with Amazon, and features… Alexa.

It is armed with eight 360-degree far-field mics for noise suppression and acoustic echo cancellation. This allows it to pick up your voice commands from 3.5m away.

Next is the Lenovo Smart Storage – a secure digital storage device with a 6TB capacity. It comes with dual-band wireless access and multi-device sync.

Not forgetting PC accessories, there’s also the Lenovo 500 Multimedia Controller – a “state of the art” wireless keboard and mouse.

Experience AR/VR with Phab 2 Pro Apps

The Phab 2 Pro is the world’s first Tango-enabled smartphone, delivering mobile AR experiences to smartphone users.

Packed with a set of sensors to capture 250,000 measurements in a second, Tango opens up new ways of immersive experiences in AR and VR.
