Shell celebrates 125 years in Malaysia  through art project featuring famous local artists

Shell 125 Years

One and a quarter century. That’s a long time. Since discovering the first drop of oil in the “Oil Town” Miri, Shell Malaysia has fueled Malaysia’s progress through innovation. Malaysia has grown tremendously in this 125 years–from its humble agricultural beginnings, to a now bustling, developing country. To celebrate its 125th anniversary, Shell unveiled Celebrating 125 Years–an art project involving famous artists including the legendary Datuk Lat, Cheeming Boey, Sabek, Yap Hanzhen, Amey Sheikh Ali, Caryn Koh, Tom Powell, and Dmojo.

Fueling Malaysia’s progress

The artists interpret the central theme of progress and the Malaysian pioneering spirit. The art, in form of 15 murals, illustrate familiar Malaysian scenes and landmarks, some showcasing nature and; Malaysia culture and society. These murals are located at selected Shell stations nationwide, at least one in each state.

Datuk Haji Azman Ismail, managing director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd explained that each mural reflects on society’s common values. The same values that Shell embraces as part of its DNA–diversity, unity, respect, and inclusiveness. Shell believes these values unite Malaysians and will propel the nation forward into the next 125 years.

The art project isn’t just the only initiative to celebrate Shell’s epic 125th anniversary this year. Last month, it also embarked on a three-day charity drive, #Pump123 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. For every litre of fuel pumped at Shell stations nationwide, 1 sen is contributed to charity. Funds collected will be disbursed to disadvantaged children across the country via six charitable organisations.

Additionally, over the course of the next two months, Shell will be releasing a series of videos called #StationStories–featuring some of its customers who share their personal stories and experiences.

Shell also hosted a gala dinner for its industry partners on 10 August. In September, it will organize a nationwide treasure hunt called Heritage Trail.
