WhatsApp gets native desktop app for Mac and Windows

WhatsApp desktop app

Early this year, popular messaging app WhatsApp extended its abilities to the desktop, via web browser. This let us read and send messages to our WhatsApp contacts right from our Macs and PCs. Today, WhatsApp announced its native desktop app, available for Windows 8+ and OS X 10.9+.

Like the web app, it’s an extension of your phone – the app mirrors all conversations and messages from your mobile device.

Because it’s a native desktop app though, you’ll have native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts and more.

Based on first impressions, the user experience is almost identical to the web version. The good thing about it though, you’ll have no tab clutter in your browser; and there’s also no chance for you to accidentally close a tab containing your WhatsApp conversations.

To download the app, visit www.whatsapp.com/download from your desktop browser. Then, open the app and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone.

Go try it out, and let us know what you think.
