Samsung 950 PRO SSD with PCIe 3.0 is 4x faster than SATA SSDs

Samsung SSD 950 PRO

If you’re looking for cutting edge performance in storage, then the new Samsung 950 PRO solid state drive (SSD) is going to blow you away. The drive features the M.2 form factor, making it slim enough to fit into notebook PCs. Its performance, industry-leading storage endurance, reliability and energy efficiency is suited for workstations, too.

The 950 PRO is Samsung‘s first consumer-ready Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) M.2 form factor SSD with vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology. NVMe is the first protocol optimised for SSDs. What this means for consumers is improved performance, power saving and potentially increase battery life and reducing operating costs.

The high bandwidth, lower latency will be perfect for high-end PCs and workstations; suited for CAD, data analysis and engineering simulation. Alternatively, the M2 2280 form factor ensures compatibility with next-generation desktop and mobile platforms that support the M.2 PCIe interface.

Samsung SSD 950 PRO

4x faster than SATA SSDs

With the PCIe Gen.3 x4 interface and supporting the NVMe protocol, the 950 PRO trumps Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) that use the legacy Advance Host Controller Interface (AHCI) protocol.

How fast is fast? In high input/output operations per second (IOPS), the 950 PRO is 4x faster than traditional SATA SSDs.

The 512GB version deliverrs sequential read/write speeds of up to 2,500MB/s and 1,500MB/s. Random read performance is up to 300,000 IOPS, while write speeds up to 110,000 IOPS. There’s also a 256GB version.

The 950 PRO features Samsung’s second generation MLC V-NAND 32-layer 128GB die with UBX controller and magician software.

The drive isn’t just fast, it’s also highly durable. It’s built with AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption to protect data. With Dynamic Thermal Guard it will keep your device and data protected in inclement weather from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius. It’s also shock and vibration resistant, of up to 1500G/0.5ms and 20G respectively.

Pricing and availability

The 950 PRO is available in 256GB and 512GB capacities and come with a 5-year limited warranty up to 200TBW (terabytes written) for the 256GB and 400TBW for the 512GB. The drive will be available in Malaysia from November 2015 onwards.
