Samsung Curved Monitor: Stunning curves for the ultimate viewing experience

Samsung Curved Monitor

Early in February, I had the opportunity to attend the Samsung Southeast Asia Forum in Bangkok, themed “Creating Possibilities. Shaping the Future.” Headlining the line-up of cutting-edge technology was the 88-inch SUHD TV, latest home appliances and the new NX500 camera. One product that completely caught my eye aside from the stunning SUHD TV was the Samsung Curved Monitor.

Straight displays are so last century

The curved display isn’t just about looks. The new curved form factor matches the natural curvature of the human eye, delivering a much more immersive viewing experience. The curved form factor is gaining traction and is changing the face of the monitor market. One of the key reasons for its increasing popularity lies with the viewing experience itself. Samsung’s curved monitors provide more natural and uniform viewing distance compared to conventional convex and flat screen LED monitors.

Stunning in every (curved) way

Without a doubt, the Samsung Curved Monitor is a stunning piece of kit. Samsung’s engineers and design team have done a great job in not just making it look good, but ensuring it delivers on performance too. The Samsung Curved Monitor has already collected numerous awards for its design and innovation including the 14/15Y CES Innovations Award (15Y, SD590C and 14Y, SE790C) and Best of CES 2015 Award from Mashable.

So, why curved? In essence, the curved screen gives you optimal curvature and an immersive panoramic experience by minimising the average distance from eye to the centre, and edges of the screen. This also generates a wider and more deeply enhanced 3D-like effect.

Because of the subtle curve, it also makes for a more comfortable and consistent viewing experience regardless of which angle or distance you are from the screen.

The monitor comes integrated with a HAS stand that allows for flexible height adjustment up to 100mm, and also tiltable to up to 20 degrees. You’ll also be able to mount the monitor on any wall with its built-in VESA 100 x 100 mount.

Specs in a nutshell

The Samsung Curved Monitor range includes the top-of-the-line SE790C, SE/SD590C and SE510C. Offering resolutions from Full HD to a cutting edge Ultra WQHD (3440 x 1440) resolution, it also features best-in-class 3,000:1 Static Contrast Ratio. This means more lifelike pictures with deeper blacks, pristine whites and more amazing, vibrant colors. It also sports an ultra-wide 21:9 for more desktop real estate. There’s also fast 4ms response time and 60Hz refresh rate.

And there’s plenty more. In terms of audio, the SE790C packs 7W, dual-channel dual stereo speakers built in the curve. On the back of the display there are 2 HDMI ports, 1 display port and 4 USB 3.0 ports.

A multimedia powerhouse

The curved display and powerful speakers on the SE790C come together to deliver an outstanding multimedia experience. But wait, there’s also some intelligent modes that enhances the experience further. If you’re into games, especially the 3D variety, then Game mode will help detect changed in scenes and enhance color and contrast. Free sync reduces screen tearing during gaming caused by input latency.

You’ll be happy to know that the Samsung Curved Monitor is also flicker free, to make viewing more comfortable, especially over long periods. In addition, there’s also an Eye Saver mode that reduced blue light emissions at the touch of a button.
