Samsung Electronics, was without a doubt, the star of the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this year. From Smart TVs to cameras, smartphones and tablets, Samsung showed why it is a force to be reckoned with for the years to come. One of the highlights was their Transparent Smart Window Display, a very exciting look into the future (something also previewed at last year’s CES). Transparent panels offer an insight to what’s to come in the coming years, next-generation display technology which will change how we interact and use our electronic devices.

Samsung is expanding the transparent display market with the production of a 46-inch transparent HD LCD panel, starting this month. The LCD panel features a contrast ratio of 4,500:1 with HD (1,366×768) resolution and 70 percent color gamut. The transparent LCD panel is being produced for myriad retail display applications like product showcases, commercial freezer doors and platform doors of subway stations in North America, Europe and Asia. Future uses will include e-boards, information windows, medical equipment, e-signage and mobile devices.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s 22-inch transparent LCD panel, which is now being commercialised, has been well-received by customers. Due to its compact size and low power consumption, it appeals to customers in the mobile, jewelry and luxury goods sectors.

According to market research firm Display Bank, the transparent display market is expected to grow from US$0.9 billion in 2015 to US$87 billion in 2025.

Samsung was a 2012 CES Innovations Award honoree.

SEOUL, Korea – January 18, 2012– Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that it is expanding the transparent display market with production of a 46-inch transparent LCD panel, beginning this month.

Younghwan Park, Senior Vice President of LCD marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics, said, “Transparent panels, an exciting application of next-generation display technology, have unlimited potential to change our viewing habits over the next several years. As a strong supporter of the transparent display market, Samsung plans to develop this technology into a new growth engine for our LCD business.”

Samsung’s 46-inch transparent LCD panel features a contrast ratio of 4,500:1 with HD (1,366×768) resolution and 70 percent color gamut.
