Apple iPhone users have long watched in amusement and deep envy as Android users construct messages rapidly and easily by “swyping” on their touchscreen smartphones. Using a patented technology called Swype, one can use a continuous finger motion across the onscreen keyboard to rapidly input words – at over 40 words per minute! Well, the wait is finally over, at least for jailbroken iPhones and iPads. Swype, in beta, is now ported to iOS. While I didn’t like Swype when I first used it a year ago, my recent experience with the Samsung Galaxy S II has been very positive. Can’t imagine typing conventionally ever again.

Swype is designed to work across a variety of devices such as phones, tablets, game consoles, kiosks, televisions, virtual screens and more. As an example, the word “quick” below was generated from tracing the path shown above in a fraction of a second, by roughly aiming to pass through the letters of the word. A key advantage to Swype is that there is no need to be very accurate, enabling very rapid text entry.

what is swype?

Here’s a demo video of the Swype in action on an iPhone 4.
