And so it’s finally here. A journey that was 18 months in the making. Yesterday, Yes launched its first ever smartphone, the Eclipse and also revealed an all-new, redesigned Yes Huddle XS. Yes calls the Eclipse “the world’s smartest phone”, and for good reasons. Read on.

It’s the network, stupid
Yes is NOT a telco. Yes, you heard it right. They are in fact, an internet company offering a full IP-based, fully converged data network with voice. And boy, have they been moving fast. 16 months ago, Yes launched with an impressive 1,100 base stations, covering 50% of the nation’s most populous. Now the number stands at 2,200. At exactly the same time next year, Yes has committed to deploying nearly 5,000 base stations to cover Peninsula Malaysia and Sabah/Sarawak. Deployment in Sabah and Sarawak has gotten approval from the MCMC, and work is expected to start in the second half of this year.

Yes 4G’s data speeds on average has outperformed all other wireless telcos consistently, in fact between 5-10 times the speed of 3G. Globally in network performance tests by city, Yes 4G has managed download speeds of up to 19.88Mbps and uploads of 4.52Mbps, beating other international telcos like T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon Wireless in the US. That’s quite a feat for a company barely 2 years old.

Over the 16 months, Yes 4G subscribers have downloaded over 2 Petabytes of data, exchanged over 4 million SMSes and chatted for over 12.5 million minutes. How much is 2 Petabytes? (is that even a word?) That’s equivalent to watching full 1080p HD videos for 24 hours a day. For 99 years.

Eclipse. The Yes 4G Ecosystem is complete.
Why build the best, fastest network without having devices to support it? With the spanking new Eclipse smartphone, Yes 4G can boast the most complete repertoire of devices. Fixed internet with the Yes Zoom, on-the-go internet with the Yes Go and Yes Huddle and now, the Yes Eclipse, representing mobile internet.

The Eclipse journey is an interesting one. For one, it took a long time. I first previewed and ‘leaked’ it last year. It was then a working prototype. My first question then to CEO Wing K Lee was, “When is it coming?” His answer then was pretty straightforward – “When we’re ready.”

Eclipse. The Journey.
Yes 4G could have done it the easy way. License an off-the-shelf Samsung or HTC, plonk in a 4G radio, re-badge the facade and packaging, and re-sell it as a Yes 4G product. That would have been a piece of cake. But wait. What about performance? What about battery life? You need to only look as far as the HTC EVO 4G to see how bad battery performance can be running several radios within a compact form factor. Several hours of battery life, seriously?

Here’s what Yes 4G decided to do. Build a phone from ground up. As challenging and crazy as that sounds given the time, effort and investment that would involve. Yes 4G commissioned the likes of Foxconn, world-class makers of such top-of-the-line smart devices like the iPhone and iPad; Qualcomm, by far the biggest mobile/embedded chipmakers in the world; and GCT, leading supplier of Mobile WiMAX solutions in the world.

Yes 4G took a flavor of Android, then when the project started, the latest Android release was 2.2 Froyo, gutted its core – system, telephony, power management; modified and optimized it to what it is now in the Eclipse. The objectives were clear – a smarter than smart, smartphone supporting 4G converged services of data and voice, legacy worldwide 2G/3G support, 4-way video (6-way for audio) conferencing, customized Yes Life services and apps, and the wealth of apps from Google Play Store. And it needed to last a full day of use.

The Eclipse achieved all that, with the backing of Google. The smartphone is Google certified, runs the Google Play Store and has full access to the plethora of 450,000 Android apps out there.

Ecliptic impressions
Now that you’ve got a primer, here are some quick details and impressions of the Eclipse. As you may have known, I had the privilege of meeting YTL Comms CEO Wing K Lee in an exclusive, intimate closed session at Yes 4G’s NOC (Network Operations Centre) in Sentul last Saturday, together with a few other influencers – the charismatic Jason Goh aka @smashpop, tech baldie @Bennimaru, the camera-shy Aman Firdaus aka @amanz and his famous boss, Ikhwan Nazri aka @tekong. The NOC is a 300-acre site, which includes a 400-strong server farm of Sun, IBM and DELL boxes. An additional 400 units will be deployed in a months time.

At the impressive premises, Wing shared the latest updates of the Yes journey and some insight on their new baby, the Eclipse.

I’ve been using the Eclipse since last week and been impressed with the build quality, first and foremost. Built by Foxconn, I frankly expect nothing less. The high grade resin exterior and 4.2″ glass display (not Corning Gorilla Glass, though) is well put together and feels nicely solid. In fact, the build quality could shame other phones of similar price points and specs.

It is neither the thinnest nor lightest of smartphones out there but it fits both the hand and the pocket snugly.

At the front top right is a 0.3MP camera for video calls and the three familiar Android resistive touch action buttons at the bottom. On the right are volume buttons and a physical camera button. At the top is the power button. Over on the underside, you get a microUSB port and a 3.5mm audio input jack.

Hello, I’m Eclipse
Powering up the Eclipse for the first time, you’ll be greeted by an Eclipse welcome screen, followed by Yes 4G branding.

No one can accuse Yes for slacking here, not withstanding a full UI skin atop Android, with customized Yes apps and services, menus and bundled apps. After logging in with your Yes ID and password, you’ll enjoy a seamless 3G/4G experience. It’s important to know that Yes 4G is a SIM-less service. Everything is powered by the innovative Yes ID. However, since it is a hybrid device, a SIM slot is included for you to slot in your 2G/3G SIM card. You effectively have all your bases covered here. And two numbers. In one phone.

You can run both networks at the same time, or turn either one off, if you want. Turning each off is as easy as just flipping a switch.

The Eclipse is smart enough to know if one network is not available and it will prompt you when you try to call or SMS.

We got to test 4-way video calling for the very first time. It worked flawlessly over the Yes network. What’s great about the UI of the video call is that it would indicate who was currently talking so there is not confusion in a multi-party chat. Now that’s smart.

Fire up YouTube and you’ll be enjoying HD videos on the go with minimal wait. Thanks to the 4G network, video streaming doesn’t even break a sweat, seriously.

Some apps bundled include social networking tools like Twidroyd, Wootfood (locally developed, owned by TJ of Ninja Joe fame) and Barcode scanner. CEO Wing had mentioned that they support local developers and would feature quality locally produced apps whenever possible.

What’s also cool is that it can act as a 4G WiFi hotspot. Just turn it on and share your high speed connection with 4 other users. Nice.

Batt out of hell
In terms of battery life, which is a major selling proposition for the Eclipse, I’ve been able to get 10-12 hours of battery life from some solid use. I’m known to not only be a petrol-guzzler but also a battery sapper. No thanks to my constant social networking, photo taking and email communications, batteries literally die on me each day. The 1500mAh battery supplied isn’t the biggest out there, but thanks to ground-up power management optimizations in the Eclipse, battery life is pretty close to the claimed 19 hour standby and 7 hour talk time.

The journey’s just begun
With the Eclipse, I feel the journey for Yes 4G, its services and devices, has only just begun. The Eclipse is a solid first effort, and I expect it and future iterations to be even better. This isn’t a full-blown review, so look out for a more exhaustive review. In the meantime, enjoy the unboxing pics and the intro video below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNZpzzvJpug

The Eclipse is available at all Yes stores and Yes retail partner outlets and is priced from as low as RM390 with the Eclipse 138 plan, and comes free with the 24-month Eclipse 238 plan.

For more on the Eclipse, visit http://www.yes.my/v3/personal/devices/eclipse.do

So, what do you think of the Eclipse?

Yes 4G, Malaysia’s 4G WIMAX operator is set to launch the much-awaited 4G-enabled smartphone next Wednesday. Yes calls it the “world’s smartest 4G phone”. We’ll see what that means very soon. I first caught a glimpse of the Android-based 4G handset last year, when YTL Communication’s CEO, Wing K Lee popped by to greet us after the shooting of a Gadget Nation segment with Adam Carruthers and fellow blogger Rebecca Saw.

While I’ve been wondering what had taken Yes so long to release their first ever 4G-powered smartphone, I’m pretty sure it should kick some ass. From my brief encounter with it last year, it’s well-built and runs Gingerbread (for Yes’ sake, I hope it’s now ICS!). It features dual-SIM, meaning it will support both 3G and 4G and will have customised Yes Life app/services built-in.

I’m getting an exclusive preview of the soon-to-be-launched 4G smartphone tomorrow ahead of the launch. I’ll post some updates. Stay tuned!

The PROTON Tuah concept was first previewed at Kuala Lumpur International Motorshow (KLIMS) 2010. The P3-21A, is rumored to be powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, or a 1.8/2.0-litre NA engine. It is reported to have class-leading 5-star NCAP safety rating and export quality specs. The sedan is expected to be launched next month.

YTL Communications’ Yes 4G has quickly expanded its reach and network since its launch 2 years ago. The 4G network now covers over 65% of Malaysia’s most populated areas and is expected to reach over 80% by end of the year. With over 2,500 base stations already in place, Yes plans to add another 1,500 base stations to support its expansion plans. Yes is the only wireless network operator in the country to offer seamless 4G connectivity along the full 960km stretch of the North-South Expressway and a large portion of the East-Coast Expressway.

PROTON and Yes plans to add smart applications like remote real-time vehicle diagnostics, security and location-based services to enhance the driving experience in the future.

PROTON and Yes are giving away a one-of-a-kind special edition Yes 4G internet-enabled PROTON Inspira worth RM100,000 as the main prize in the ‘Win Malaysia’s First 4G Internet Car’ Facebook contest. The Inspira features a custom paint job, limited edition 18-inch sports rims, as well as three Apple iPad 2 and a Yes Huddle wireless mobile router, mounted on custom engineered fixtures in the vehicle.

The ‘Win Malaysia’s First 4G Internet Car’ contest runs till 27 March 2012. For more information about the contest and full details of the special edition Proton Inspira powered by Yes 4G, visit www.yes.my.

It’s certainly a milestone for our national car maker and the young telco, and I think this will spur other car makes to jump on the bandwagon soon. While some of you may express concern over driver safety, just as mobile phone and GPS device use is concerned, active use of smart applications should be by passengers, not drivers.

The 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab is expected to be established in early 2012 at P1′s headquarters, known affectionally as Packet Hub. The experience centre is a result of the collaboration between P1′s consulting arm, Packet One International Pte Ltd (“P1i”) and ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) with support from China Mobile Communications Co. Ltd Research Institute (“China Mobile”).

The Centre will initially utilise P1’s 2.6GHz spectrum for the LTE TDD technology showcase and interoperability testing of the latest 4G devices. By the first half 2012, the network will also utilise P1’s 2.3GHz spectrum. Operators and vendors will get a taste of the blazing speeds of up to 120Mbps at the facility.

Malaysia is a natural choice for the set-up as for over the ast three years, P1 has been operating one of the largest 4G WIMAX networks in the world. It is understood that P1 is very advanced in its preparations to move from 4G WiMAX to a dual 4G WiMAX/LTE TDD network. Since its inception, Packet Hub has received over 70 telco operators and vendors from 60 countries to understand how a 4G network is being deployed and managed, signifying P1i’s vital role of assisting aspiring 4G operators in adopting this technology of the future. The 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab hopes to encourage over 530 WiMAX operators in 150 countries towards a smooth migration to LTE TDD technology. This includes encouraging the LTE deployment and WiMAX transition in Asia and Africa.

The commercialization of LTE TDD is anticipated to take off in 2011 and the 4G LTE TDD Experience Centre and Test Lab will provide a test bed for LTE TDD, LTE FDD and WiMAX.

The future for wireless is exciting indeed.

MALAYSIA TO HAVE SEA’S FIRST 4G EXPERIENCE CENTRE AND TEST LAB

HONG KONG, 15 November 2011 – The cutting-edge 4G technology is getting a timely boost with the setting up of a Southeast Asia’s first 4G LTE TDD* Technology Experience Centre and Test Lab in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This breakthrough is the result of the collaboration between Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”), P1’s consulting arm Packet One International Pte Ltd (“P1i”), and ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”). It also gains support from China Mobile Communications Co. Ltd Research Institute (“China Mobile”).

The 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab will be established in early 2012 at P1’s headquarters known as Packet Hub. Operators and vendors who want a taste of blazing wireless speeds of 120 Mbps and beyond are welcome to utilize the facility.

Malaysia is the choice location for the set-up because P1 is based in Kuala Lumpur and has, for over the last three years, been operating one of the largest 4G WiMAX networks in the world. P1 is very advanced in its preparations to progress from 4G WiMAX to a dual 4G WiMAX/LTE TDD network.

Michael Lai, CEO of P1 said, “The impact of 4G technology on our lives will be phenomenal. P1’s customers today utilize a whopping average of 17.5GB of data per month, an increase of two and a half times the amount of data utilization since our commercial launch in 2008. What’s even more mind-boggling, data utilization is growing by the day with the proliferation of high-definition screens and nifty handheld devices. Telco operators have no choice but to be ready for this mega trend of fibre optics in the air and the great paradigm shift from voice to data business model. P1 is ready and hence the 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab will hopefully fast-track 4G LTE TDD technology deployment in this region.”

Managing Director of P1i Dr. Tang Pen San commented that in the last three years since P1’s commercial deployment, its headquarters has received over 70 telco operators and vendors from 60 countries to understand how a 4G network is being deployed and managed. “P1i’s role is to assist aspiring 4G operators to a smoother adoption of this cutting edge technology,” Dr. Tang added.

Dr. Wang ShouChen, President of the ZTE LTE TDD product line commented in the same event, “As the leader of LTE TDD technology and one of the major LTE TDD solution providers, ZTE is excited and proud to be part of this collaboration. We have established a strong partnership with P1 in last two years. This 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab allow us to extend this partnership and bring it to a higher level. The Centre helps to better promote the migration towards LTE TDD technology and demonstrate the values come with this transition.”

Huang Yuhong, Deputy General Manager of China Mobile Research Institute when attending the LTE TDD/FDD** International Summit held here commented, “LTE TDD is flexible in resource and spectrum configuration, therefore better meets the demand of mobile data traffic. LTE TDD benefits from the global roaming and global scale created by the convergence of LTE TDD and FDD. The commercialization of LTE TDD takes off in 2011, with early adopters including incumbent mobile operators, greenfield operators, and WiMAX operators. The 4G LTE TDD Experience Centre and Test Lab will provide a base for testing and investigating interoperability among LTE TDD, LTE FDD and WiMAX. It will promote the LTE deployment and WiMAX transition in Asia and Africa and build a global success.”

Lai said, “For any technology mass adoption, the eco-system must be in place. In this case, the DNA or Device, Network and Application have to evolve in tandem and coherently. The 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab is a clear and steady roadmap to encourage over 530 WiMAX operators in 150 countries towards a smooth and natural migration to LTE TDD technology. After all, WiMAX and LTE TDD are from the same Internet-Protocol family of technology. This will be achieved through sharing our experience and advice on multi-mode deployment, interworking with 2G, 3G and WiFi, WiMAX, LTE TDD/FDD network planning and optimization in the 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands.”

The Centre will initially utilize P1’s 2.6GHz spectrum for LTE TDD technology showcase and interoperability testing of the latest 4G devices. By the first half 2012, the network will also utilize P1’s 2.3GHz spectrum.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YES EXPANDS SALES CHANNEL TO EAST COAST TO MEET GROWING DEMAND
Expansive sales network of over 37 authorised retailers and distributors to serve growing demand of internet hungry customers in the East Coast

KUANTAN — October 22, 2011 — Yes, one of the most advanced 4G networks in the world, today announced that it has expanded its sales network to Malaysia’s East Coast to meet a growing demand for mobile internet services in the region. The Yes sales network comprising over 37 authorised retailers and distributors will support its customers in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan to help boost broadband penetration in outlying cities and towns within these states.

In conjunction with the announcement, Yes also launched its first official East Coast outlet in East Coast Mall, Kuantan, Pahang. The fully operational outlet located on the second floor of the mall comes complete with demo stations and registration counters and is opened seven days a week from 10am to 10pm. Customers can look forward to experiencing true 4G performance that is three to five times faster than 3G, along with a host of other innovative services including Yes’s unique unified communications solution.

Unlike conventional mobile networks, Yes’s unified communications solution replaces physical SIM cards with a single user ID to offer subscribers seamless connectivity across multiple devices concurrently. The Yes service allows subscribers to be contacted on any device, whether mobile phone or computer using just one single 018 number. This innovation is the first of its kind in Malaysia and the world.

“I am tremendously delighted that with the expansion of our sales channel and the launch of our first ever East Coast outlet, Yes is now able to serve even more Malaysians with our advanced 4G network. We look forward to bringing world class mobile Internet, telephony and more to enable East Coast cities with a level playing field to fundamentally improve the way people live, work and play. No other operator in Malaysia can offer the same performance or value!” said Wing K. Lee, CEO, YTL Communications.

In November 2010, Yes launched its 4G mobile Internet with voice service on a nationwide scale. With its network spanning over 65% of Malaysia’s population, the company has deployed over 2,000 base stations with more than 2,000 others to be built by 2012. Yes is the only wireless operator that can offer uninterrupted 4G data and voice connectivity along the full 966km span of the North-South Expressway – Malaysia’s longest highway. And with the launch today, we are pleased to announce the availability of our superior mobile broadband connectivity on the East-West Expressway. Barely a year old, Yes has over 380,000 subscribers to date.

Globally recognized at the Broadband World Forum 2011 in Paris recently, Yes won the prestigious Broadband InfoVision Awards 2011 under the ‘Best New Service’ category. This is a strong validation of the innovation YTL Communications is pioneering.

In addition to expanding its sales network to serve key markets beyond West Coast, Yes is also planning to supplement its current offerings with new plans and packages that make its world-class services even more affordable to markets outside urban centres. Yes is confident that the new soon-to-be released packages will serve as a catalyst for Malaysians outside city centres to adopt its innovative mobile broadband with voice that will improve their lives.

“The East Coast market is very important to us. We see a lot of potential for growth in these three states. There is also an increasing awareness and demand for internet, especially with high performance mobile broadband. At the same time, we also understand that offering these world-class services at a competitive price point is crucial to make mobile Internet enticing and a true pathway to close the digital divide.” Mr. Lee concluded.

This is truly amazing considering that it has only been a year since we began commercial operations in November 2011,” said Wing K. Lee, Chief Executive Officer, YTL Communications.

The IDC study also looked into two rival 4G technologies in the country – LTE and WiMAX. While LTE would be a strong competitor to WiMAX in the future, it is doubtful that future LTE operators in Malaysia would deploy their networks in a similar manner to YES’ unified communications approach, for fear of cannibalising 3G voice cash flows.

IDC’s found that YES 4G’s average download and upload speeds surpasses all other major mobile operators including its 4G rival, P1. YES 4G service offers what IDC considers as true mobile broadband bandwidth (more than 1mbps downlink most of the time) with consistent coverage. UC (unified communications) experience with video calling in a mobile environment can only be achieved with throughput like on the YES 4G network, a feat virtually impossible with 3G today. The only technologies that can compete with 802.16e in terms of performance would be HSPA+ and LTE. LTE will not come into the picture until 2013 in Malaysia.

In conclusion, IDC believes that YTL, the new boy in town, is an excellent example of innovation that 4G operators (LTE and WiMAX) will need in order to survive the challenge of today’s and the future’s exploding traffic usage, broadband + social networking + video demands.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YES 4G: ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED WIRELESS NETWORKS IN THE WORLD
Through innovation, Yes sets the standard for mobile networks of the future, designed to perfectly meet the explosion in the demand for mobile data

KUALA LUMPUR — October 24, 2011 — YTL Communications’ drive to bring positive change through innovation is today validated with an IDC study that finds the Yes 4G network and its related services to be one of the most advanced in the world. In addition, IDC says that the Yes 4G network, which is perfectly designed to meet the explosion in mobile data usage, is an excellent model of a wireless network for the future.

The study which looked at the state of mobile communications industry in Malaysia, highlights YTL Communications’ core believe in delivering positive change to Malaysia and Malaysians through innovation. In addition, the study gives a clear indication of the advanced nature of the YTL Communications WiMAX-based Yes 4G network incorporating features and services that are truly unique and not currently available anywhere else in the world. This is an amazing feat for a network that is just only coming to its first anniversary this November.

“IDC’s findings bring credence to what we have been saying all along. Yes is the most advanced 4G network in the world and Malaysians should be proud of this fact. With the Yes network, Malaysia has become a model country for how mobile networks of the future should be engineered and built. This is truly amazing considering that it has only been a year since we began commercial operations in November 2011,” said Wing K. Lee, Chief Executive Officer, YTL Communications.

Several key innovations built into the Yes 4G network that sets it apart from other wireless networks currently available in the world include:

At its core, the Yes 4G network architecture is among the best and most advanced in the world, capable of offering services not available anywhere else such as user ID-based unified communications, session concurrency for data and telephony and a high-performance mobile data network that delivers superior data connectivity even at high speeds (mobile connectivity at speeds up to 160km/h)

A highly flexible mobile telephony and text messaging service that sets the standard for mobile networks of the future. Yes is the only network in the world that allows multiple and concurrent connections providing subscribers with flexibility and significant cost savings because they only need one account for telephony and data services even when using multiple devices and locations.

A suite of applications called Yes Life that is free for all customers. Yes Life works perfectly on Mac and Windows computers as well as iOS (iPod touch, iPhone, iPad) and Android devices. Yes Life enables these devices with full mobile phone functionality. Harnessing the power of the Yes ID, which comes with a dedicated mobile number, Yes subscribers can make and receive calls and SMSes from anywhere in the world (including Malaysia), on their favourite devices at a low RM0.09/min of voice call or RM0.09/text message to all Malaysian numbers. Customers can also enjoy the benefits of not paying expensive roaming charges when using Yes Life when traveling overseas.

A true mobile broadband service with consistent speeds three to five times faster than any wireless network in the country.

Commenting on the mobile communications landscape in Malaysia, the IDC study also looked into the two dominant 4G technologies in the country – LTE and WiMAX – and the prospects of the two technologies in Malaysia. IDC found that although LTE would be a strong competitor to WiMAX in the future, it is doubtful that the future LTE operators in Malaysia would deploy networks in a similar manner to Yes’ unified communications approach (with VoIP being a very integral part of the network) for fear of cannibalizing 3G voice cash flows.

Furthermore, YTL Communications’, monumental deployment of over 2,000 base stations currently and an extensive 65% population coverage footprint since day one (largest 4G network in Malaysia) is not likely to be emulated by other operators looking to deploy its own 4G network. This network is currently support by a sales channel that has grown rapidly from 600 outlets in December 2010 to over 2,000 to date.

In essence, the IDC study reveals that while technology standards play an important role in the development of 4G networks in Malaysia, what is even more important is the willingness for operators to undergo a paradigm shift from a predominantly voice-centric business model to a data and service-centric business model.

While operators are willing to adopt new technologies to deliver better data performance, innovating the traditional mobile communications business, can prove to be an even bigger challenge.

“We are tremendously inspired by IDC’s findings and this will spur us to bring even more innovations to our customers. More importantly our short-term goal will be to expand the reach of the Yes 4G network even further thus enabling communities to leap from 2G to 4G to enjoy the many benefits of our advanced network services ” Wing concluded.

Earlier this month, Yes was awarded “Best New Service” at the prestigious 2011 Broadband InfoVision Awards. With the win, YTL Communications joins an elite list of operators from around the world including, British Telecoms, Australia’s Telstra and Hong Kong’s PCCW, all of which have been past winners at the annual Broadband InfoVision Awards.

Notable excerpts from the IDC report:
“YTL wants to differentiate its service from its competitors by offering true mobile broadband speeds with more consistent coverage than what the 3G operators are delivering today. At the same time, YTL wants its users to experience broadband UC such as video calling in the mobile environment, which is virtually impossible with 3G today in Malaysia.”

“YTL wanted from the outset an Internet compatible, SIM-less architecture that offers users device independence. Thus, the handset does not need to use a SIM card to access the network. Entry into the Yes service begins with the selection of a User ID (Yes ID) and each Yes ID comes with a Malaysian mobile number. YTL has also designed a novel mechanism to enable service concurrency. The end result is that for the first time, a customer can use the same account for all his devices and products. This simple but elegant approach results in tangible savings and added convenience for the customer.”

“One of the key challenges in the planning of the Yes network was to ensure that there would be enough coverage and capacity from day one so that users can experience continuous mobile broadband service even along the highways. YTL launched its Yes 4G service in November 2011 with coverage of 65% of the population with 1,200 BTS (base-stations). Over the last six months, it has increased coverage to 1,700 cell sites including full mobile Internet coverage on Malaysia’s North-South Expressway that runs from the Singapore border to the Thai border — a first in Malaysian history. So far, YTL has invested some US$250 million. It has contracted Samsung to provide 2,500 BST which means it still has the ability to deploy and cover more areas and to further increase capacity.”

“In terms of its speed, at the time of writing, its average download and upload speeds surpasses all other major mobile operators including its 4G rival, P1.”

“The Yes 4G service offers what IDC would consider true mobile broadband bandwidth (i.e., more than 1mbps downlink most of the time) with consistent coverage, so that users can experience UC (unified communications) with video calling in a mobile environment which is virtually impossible with 3G today. The only technologies that can compete with 802.16e in terms of performance would be HSPA+ and LTE. LTE will not come into the picture until 2013 in Malaysia. As for HSPA+, Maxis just rolled out this service in a limited scale last year and Celcom has only moved forward with upgrade plans this year.”

“YTL chose a prepaid billing system with real-time charging but offers postpaid-like service packages. In particular, users can use their credit cards to top up their accounts on a pay-as-you-go basis or purchase reload cards. On top of that, YTL has provided the ability to carry over unused data, minutes, or SMS to the next month with its Valuepack offerings. The advantage of the prepaid billing system is that it has realtime charging capabilities and the postpaid services are actually provisioned on top of the prepaid system. This architecture gives YTL great flexibility to offer packages suitable to the changing needs of the market.”

“YTL’s UC (unified communications) solution is unique in that it would work even if users do not have a WiMAX device. The Yes service allows inbound and outbound calls and SMS messaging through their mobile devices and desktop/laptop software, while still tied to the same mobile station international ISDN (MSISDN) number. YTL is pioneering the multi-device UC concept where the receiver of a call, when contacted via his phone number, will have a concurrent ring across devices. This gives the user the choice of accepting the call either on his/her mobile phone, computer, or regular PSTN phone connected through the Yes home gateway.”

“YTL launched its 4G WiMAX service in November 2010 in a market that is considered to be underserved in terms of fixed and wireless broadband access but well served in terms of mobile (GSM) voice access.”

“YTL’s venture into the WiMAX space would represent the first in Asia/Pacific and possibly globally to offer mobile voice services over the WiMAX data channel putting it ahead of its 4G competitors; but this also means YTL will be in competition with the three big mobile players Maxis, Celcom, and DiGi.”

“YTL’s Yes service currently offers two distinct competitive advantages compared to the other operators. It is the only provider to offer a UC solution with a single-number reach concept for the consumer. On top of that, network performance is above its competition. If YTL can execute its coverage expansion as planned and can deliver mobile broadband smoothly to end users while managing exploding traffic demands, then IDC believes it can play an exciting and disruptive role in the Malaysia mobile market by raising the bar for mobile broadband on the go and in the home or office”

“IDC believes that YTL, despite its network being new and needing more time to build a critical mass of users, has made technology and business choices that offer an excellent example of innovation that 4G operators (LTE and WiMAX) will need in order to survive the challenge of exploding traffic usage, broadband + social networking + video, and to have the tools to better understand user usage patterns in real time. Unlike most of the 3G community that are extremely cautious in deploying VoIP over LTE, YTL is not shying away from it but rather embracing it wholeheartedly.”

U Mobile announced a strategic partnership with ZTE earlier this year, which promises steady upgrades from its current 42Mpbs to 84Mbps and eventually 100Mbps in the future.

U Mobile is making this high speed broadband service affordable by allowing customers to “rent” the 42Mbps modem for as low as RM20 per month. There are two data plans depending on individual usage requirements – the 5GB plan from RM48 per month and the 20GB plan from RM108 per month. U Mobile also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee with no additional charges to ensure customer satisfaction.

My take:
I’ve been a paying subscriber of U Mobile’s services for several months (since the launch of the unlimited internet plan, actually), currently on the RM28 per month unlimited internet prepaid plan. While mobile phone speeds will never reach 42Mbps as compared to a broadband modem, a theoretic 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps peak download speed is possible depending on the mobile device. My experience throughout the couple of months using the plan as a secondary line has been very positive. While the weakness for U Mobile’s HSPA/3G network is ultimately coverage, in areas where coverage is available, speeds are consistently at 1-2Mbps, at least. It has one of the better data throughput performance I’ve tested so far over 3G/3.5G. With the prepaid plan, it’s very cheap to run and the quota of 500MB per month is sufficient for moderate use. The big plus side – users do not get cut off when they run out of credit, instead throttled down to 128Kbps. My gripes include limited coverage area and very low upload speeds, which can be rather frustrating even for uploading an image or tweeting.

Speaking to several users regarding U Mobile performance, I’ve received very positive feedback pertaining their mobile dongles, with impressive throughput performance overall. One user on U Mobile’s prepaid mobile prepaid plan, Fadlisham Fadzil, commented that there is no congestion within 3G coverage area and download speeds are fast. Fadzil also lamented that he would highly recommend the prepaid plan to friends. Calls from U Mobile to U Mobile are free. While the positives outweigh the negatives, the general view is that U Mobile needs to widen coverage overall.

For now, U Mobile offers a cheap and fast alternative to other mainstream mobile broadband services out there in the market.
