Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 2012) Coming in June

Apple‘s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is coming again to San Francisco’s Moscone West. The much-anticipated five-day conference will run from June 11 through June 15 where developers will be learning about the future of iOS and OS X, featuring technical sessions and a showcase of outstanding iOS/OS X apps at the Apple Design Awards. Saying WWDC 2012 is a hot event is probably an understatement. Tickets sold out in 2 hours.

For Apple, WWDC isn’t just a massive get together with developers, but also a platform where it also announces/launches new products. Last year, Apple launched iOS 5, iCloud and a stream of other innovations. For its 5,000 attendees, the opening keynote by the late Steve Jobs, Apple CEO was always something to look forward to.

WWDC 2012 will showcase iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion, the future iterations of Apple’s operating systems. More than 100 technical sessions and hands-on labs will be presented by over 1,000 Apple engineers will provide developers with insight, code-level assistance and guidance on how to make most of iOS and OS X technologies in their apps.

Every year, Apple recognises the best of the best iPhone, iPad and Mac apps at the Apple Design Awards.

The rumour-mongering has already begun online about a liquid-metal iPhone 5, rumoured to be announced in June. While there is no indication of a June release (Apple launched the iPhone 4S in October last year), the world simply loves a good rumour! Well, what do you think?

The pace at how tickets for the developer conference had sold out has angered and disappointed some developers. Ticketless devs may have another option if Indie Developer Lab can help it. According to Slashgear, these boys are organising a WWDC-type event just around the corner from Moscone West.

CUPERTINO, California—April 25, 2012—Apple® today announced that it will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 11 through June 15 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. At this year’s five-day conference, developers will learn about the future of iOS and OS X®, allowing them to build incredible new apps. WWDC will also feature more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers as well as the popular Apple Design Awards, a showcase of the most outstanding apps from the past year.

“We have a great WWDC planned this year and can’t wait to share the latest news about iOS and OS X Mountain Lion with developers,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The iOS platform has created an entirely new industry with fantastic opportunities for developers across the country and around the world.”

Developers will be able to explore the latest innovations, features and capabilities of iOS and OS X Mountain Lion and learn how to greatly enhance the functionality, performance, quality and design of their apps. Developers can even bring their code to the labs and work with Apple engineers, applying development techniques and best-practices to enhance their apps.

Activities at Apple’s WWDC 2012 include:

more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers on a wide range of technology-specific topics for developing, deploying and integrating the latest iOS and OS X technologies;
100 hands-on labs staffed by more than 1,000 Apple engineers providing developers with code-level assistance, insight into optimal development techniques and guidance on how they can make the most of iOS and OS X technologies in their apps;
the opportunity to connect with thousands of fellow iOS and OS X developers from around the world—last year more than 60 countries were represented;
engaging and inspirational lunchtime sessions with leading minds and influencers from the worlds of technology, science and entertainment; and
Apple Design Awards which recognize iPhone®, iPad® and Mac® apps that demonstrate technical excellence, innovation and outstanding design.

Apple announced today its earnings for its second fiscal quarter of 2012. The impressive numbers beat industry estimates but were down from the Cupertino company’s previous record-breaking quarters. Revenues amounted to $39.2 billion with a net profit of $11.6 billion in Q1 2012. This translates to earnings of $12.30 per diluted share. Gross margin was 47.4 percent compared to 41.4 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 64 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, a 88 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter and 11.8 million iPads in the quarter representing a 151 percent jump over the year-ago quarter. This while quietly shifting 4 million Macs. Sales were up 7% compared to the quarter a year ago. Apple also sold 7.7 million iPods.

The bump in the first-quarter forecast will ripple forward to the rest of the year. For calendar 2012, J.P. Morgan is looking at iPhone sales of 138.2 million, up from the prior estimate of 128.7 million. And iPad sales could hit 69.6 million, compared with an earlier forecast of 58.6 million.

We are thrilled with sales of over 35 million iPhones and almost 12 million iPads in the March quarter,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The new iPad is off to a great start, and across the year you’re going to see a lot more of the kind of innovation that only Apple can deliver.”

The record March quarter generated $14 billion in cash flow from operations, growing Apple’s cash pile which is now topping a cool $100 billion. Apple expects revenue in the coming third quarter to be about $34 billion with diluted earnings per share of about $8.68.

Apple’s share price blipped to over $600 as it beat analysts predictions. Its market capitalization tops over $560 billion, making it the most valuable company and technology company in the world. In March this year, Apple announced plans for quarterly dividend payouts of $2.65 per share sometime in the Q4 2012, which begins on July 1, 2012. Apple’s Board of Directors also authorized a $10 billion share repurchase program which will commence in 2013 (begins on September 30, 2012). The share repurchase program will be executed over three years.

Apple will provide a replay of its Q2 2012 financial results conference call in two weeks time.

The Future of iOS 5 is Over-The-Air (OTA)

MacRumors has stumbled upon what seems to be a new Automatic Update feature set to be part of iOS 5. What this means is that iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices will have the ability to update apps/system without tethered sync to a Mac/PC. Apple quickly removed this from view after the leak was discovered. Over-the-Air updates and wireless syncing would be a welcome feature for iOS device users, something Android users have been enjoying since day one. Let’s hope this comes true come Steve’s WWDC keynote later tonight.

iPhone 3G for USD199? You gotta be kidding me!

How about that? Twice as fast and at half the price! Amazing, amazing value for money. The new iPhone trounces the old with HSDPA and GPS (unfortunately retains the crap 2.0MP camera). No second camera for video calls, as rumoured which is a bummer. But heck, USD199 with contract and available in July in over 70 countries.

Question is, why isn’t Malaysia on the list? Tiny neighbours Singapore are getting theirs on July 11. Maxis, hello???

Bottomline is, this is gonna blow the entire market away. Hardware-wise it isn’t a whole new reinvented iPhone, in fact it looks pretty much the same. With the iPhone 2.0 Software built-in, there are plenty of new extras. Fact is, Apple is trying to aggressively grow the market with the price point and bloody hell, I think it’s gonna work.

Five for me, please Steve. Thanks.

If the iPod was a phone, what would it be like?

Isamu Sanada, famous Japanese product designer, whose cutting-edge concepts of Apple products has left the world salivating and wanting (yours truly, absolutely included!), has done it again with his Apple iPod-phone hybrid concepts.

Apple has always been rumoured to add a full-featured, multimedia phone to its expanding product line, although CEO Steve Jobs has openly denied this countless times. The closest ever realisation is the iTunes compatible Motorola ROKR mobile phone. Even so, implementation is far from ideal.

But imagine this. Imagine the Apple mobile. A hybrid of the best features from the iPod (music playing, photos, videos, PDA features) and that of a very advanced mobile platform, like a Sony Ericsson. Made to please.

Of course, undeniably, you have one of the best mobile phones on the planet already with the Sony Ericsson W900i.

Oh well, while we wait, let’s just drool over some Sanada concepts shall we?

A few strangely, look like current offerings from Sony Ericsson. Sony inspired by Sanada? Who knows? But if Apple ever released mobile phones, take your pic people. Stunning.
