The rumour mills have gone wild with the much-anticipated successor to the best-selling GALAXY S II, the curvy GALAXY S III, Samsung’s first smartphone running Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. A May 3 launch date is confirmed, with simultaneous launch events in London, New York, Seoul and Dubai.

Confirmed specs point to a Samsung quad-core 1.4Ghz Exynos chipset with a high performance Mali-400MP GPU and a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, the first in the world. The Super AMOLED Plus display supports 720 x 1184 pixel resolution which translates to about 320dpi pixel density, rivaling Apple iPhone 4S‘s Retina Display. 1GB RAM comes as standard.

An 8MP HD camera is confirmed although fresh rumours have indicated 12MP, which is highly realistic given what’s out in the market right now. A baseline unit of 16GB flash storage, upgradeable to 32GB via MicroSD is expected.

The form factor indicates a slim profile with curved glass (with Corning Gorilla Glass, no less). The GALAXY S III will be a quad-band phone, and will have support for 4G LTE 700. Battery life should be pretty good with a 2050mAh bundled battery, although I’d wish it was at least 2,500mAh.

This video was leaked on Youtube. Apparently in Vietnam, but it sounds a whole lot like Thai to me. In any case, it seems to be a test/prototype unit. Watch it below:

The superphone race is going to be very, very interesting and you can bet the GALAXY S III will a scorcher. Rest assured the world is going to see some Samsung marketing muscle behind the new flagship device, as you’ve seen with the S II and Note.

The million dollar question for Malaysian customers – when is the GALAXY S III going to be available in Malaysia? According to close Samsung sources, end of May. So hold your horses and stay tuned!

The Korean consumer electronics giant is happy to fire into every demographic. There seems to be no stopping the Samsung factory as it churns out yet another iteration of Android-powered smartphone. We first saw and touched this at the Samsung Forum Asia 2012 in Bangkok. And now a new mid-range Android is here in Malaysia. Come welcome the GALAXY S Advance.

Like the top-of-the-line GALAXY Nexus, the GALAXY S Advance features a special curved glass design, which enhances handling of the phone and fits a user’s face more naturally. Despite being a somewhat budget phone, Samsung has managed to squeeze a 4.0″ Super AMOLED display into the phone. The new smartphone also comes with a 5MP camera with flash.

Powering the “baby GALAXY S II” is a dual-core 1GHz processor with support of HSPA 14.4Mbps connectivity. It runs only Android Gingerbread 2.3 unfortunately (though expected of a midrange phone), but should get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) in the future. On top of Gingerbread is of course, the Samsung flavoured TouchWIZ interface, seasoned with Samsung Hubs and ChatON services.

The Samsung GALAXY S Advance retails at RM 1,299 and is available from early May onwards at all Samsung retail outlets and authorized dealers.

Kuala Lumpur, 5 April 2012 – A train station covered with art generally conjures images of graffiti and murals, more often than not created by bare hands and paint. A centrally located train terminal is not a typical location to display artful pieces, illustrations, sketches and doodles created from a digital mobile device, but that is exactly what Samsung has done to Kuala Lumpur’s main LRT station located where the city had its beginnings.

The Masjid Jamek LRT station has been selected by the global digital media and convergence technologies leader as its first “art gallery” to display whimsical, fanciful and delightful digital art pieces created on its first hybrid smartphone, Samsung GALAXY Note.

More than 140 panels that make up 29 art pieces are on display on the station’s exterior and interior facades, meandering its corridors and escalators. Some 1.4 million

KL commuters and tourists are using the Ampang and Kelana Jaya lines monthly via Masjid Jamek LRT station and they will be able to view these pieces that demonstrate the power and versatility of the Samsung GALAXY Note.

Popularly referred to as “Gallery Note,” the art exhibit will be on display for 12 months. On hand to open Gallery Note were senior executives from Samsung, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad, and Big Tree Outdoor.

A Celebration of Visual Expression

“Gallery Note at Masjid Jamek is a celebration of visual expression and our modest effort to add to the unique scenery of Kuala Lumpur. As a leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, we are committed to innovating and producing devices that provide a rich user experience,” said Kwon Jae Hoon, Managing Director of Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn. Bhd.

“Samsung GALAXY Note is a smartphone that will delight both serious and casual smartphone users. It has the capability to deliver simple drawings or more complicated diagrams. We hope that this gallery of illustrations will inspire the artist in everyone to experience the power of Samsung GALAXY Note and create doodles of their own,” Kwon stated.

Much of the Gallery Note exhibits are reflective of the environment in which they are placed, enabling commuters to interact with the artwork and its setting. The huge ‘Kinabalu Climb Challenge,’ is located on the longest stairs at the station, measuring more than 10 meters in length. The art piece likens the climb upstairs to trekking up Mount Kinabalu.

Additionally, QR codes enhance the interactive experience. The QR code for the art piece named ‘Distance in Steps’ may link users to maps of the landmark through Google Maps, or a website about the landmark and its significance. Each art piece is connected to different links, ensuring commuters have something different to experience each time they pass their favourite art piece.

Underground Art at KLCC

Gallery Note is also set up at Kuala Lumpur City Centre Convex Tunnel, which connects the Suria KLCC shopping mall to the Convention Centre, Aquaria as well as the new pedestrian tunnel. The massive art piece, ‘Samsung GALAXY Vortex,’ envelopes the entire tunnel, featuring a vibrant stream of various marine life on the ceiling that congregates into a stream of everyday items, such as a guitar, a barbeque set, and a TV.

So realistic are the images that shoppers and commuters have been seen touching and further examining the illustrations to see if they are real.

The Samsung GALAXY Note – the Ultimate Do-in-One Smartphone

Launched in November 2011, the Samsung GALAXY Note has seen worldwide sales rise to five million units in six months. The device is known for its large, 5.3 HD Super AMOLED display and combines the portability of a smartphone with the expansive viewing experience, multi-tasking and content creation capabilities of a diverse set of multimedia devices.

So years after the perennial social photography app Instagram literally conquered the iOS space, it has finally (insert exasperation here…) come to the realms of the green robot. IMHO, i consider Instagram the one principal reason why I’d buy an iPhone.

The absence of Instagram in the Android space has opened doors to Instagram-type copies like picplz and MOLOME (whom I had the pleasure to meet during BlackBerry DevCon 2011 in Singapore). None of course has enjoyed the phenomenal success of Instagram over on the fruity side. Pre-Android, Instagram has a staggering 27 million users worldwide. Instagram is rumored to be raising $40 million on a valuation of $500 million.

Instagram founder Kevin Systrom lamented recently at SXSW Interactive that the Android Instagram app is better than its iOS counterpart. As if to reassure himself that the Android version would at least be a good. I consider that, however, almost akin to shooting oneself in the foot. We’ll have to see about that. App review coming right up.

Twitterverse, especially amongst techie peers have been quick to install and test the app. In fact, over 430,000 users signed up for the waiting list a week and a half ago. Reactions have varied from sheer delight to being underwhelmed.

In terms of feature-set, they are the same across iOS and Android. Visually, design adjustments and tweaks have been made to fit the Android UI.

Instagram is downloadable for free from Google’s Play Store and is compatible with all camera phones running Android 2.2 and above.

As we speak, I am getting notifications on my iPad from Android friends who have joined Instagram. Even more artistic Facebook pic updates from now on, I guess?

Have you installed and tried it out? Tell me what you think!
