Samsung is all set for the big unveil of its flagship phablet – Galaxy Note 5, which will be taking centre stage at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event in New York. The Korean smartphone giant is also set to reveal the Galaxy S6 edge+ and a mystery tablet device.

Since its introduction, the Note series has been an unexpected hit for Samsung. Who would have thought they’d to a smartphone in excess of 5.5 inches. Not only that, the Note brought with it the S Pen, and made the stylus cool again.

Several years on, there still hasn’t been much competition for the Note series. It’s still the runaway leader in the space and IMHO, that’s not going to change anytime soon.

So what next? Can the Note 5 motivate current Note users to upgrade? Can it hit critical mass? Can Samsung re-invent the phablet space?

Here’s what to expect

Rumours and leaks have been rife, with purported real photos of the device and its packaging. Samsung has done little or nothing to quash these rumours, and if history repeats itself, these leaks should be close to the actual product.

In terms of design, the Note 5 design will be aligned with the current crop of Galaxy devices – svelte all-round metal body, premium build and improved S Pen.

The Note 5 is said to feature a 5.67-inch QHD Super AMOLED display (2,560×1,440) sans curved edges.

@evleaks has revealed that the Note 5 (model number: SM-N920) runs an octa-core Exynos 7420 chip (dual 2.1GHz, quad 1.5GHz), and comes with 32GB of storage.

The flagship phablet will come in four colours: Gold, Silver, Black and White.

Like the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, the Note 5 will sport the 16MP main camera with Samsung’s ISOCELL sensor. IMHO, the best smartphone camera to date, so this should make plenty of camera-totting consumers happy. The front gets a wide-angle 5MP.

Samsung has purportedly integrated an auto-eject feature to the S Pen, as well as improved the handwriting recognition and usability in the Note 5. Leaked images also show that there’s a new Air Command menu – the pop-up manu that appears when the S Pen is detached.

For the first time ever with a Note series, the new phablet will not have a microSD slot nor a removable battery. Is this a deal-breaker? Samsung hopes it’s not.
