Lola: The startup that offers safer tampons as a subscription

A new startup in the US named Lola is making a new, safer tampon. And it is offering the new hygiene product as a subscription.

Lola has just picked up US$1.2 million in seed funding, secured from big name investors like BoxGroup, VaynerRSE, Andy Dunn, 14W and Thrive Capital’s Josh Kushner and Will Gaybrick.

Lola isn’t just scheduling deliveries to its subscribers, that would have been too easy. Instead, Lola went ahead and developed a new kind of tampon.

In the US, tampons are considered medical devices and thus requires approval from the FDA. FDA doesn’t require companies to list all the ingredients. Hence, the issue of actual ingredients in existing tampons.

Contrary to what women expect to be in a tampon, cotton isn’t the primary ingredient. Surprise, surprise. They’re typically made from a blend of artificial fibres, rayon and polyester, and may include chemicals and dyes. Rayon, if you’re aware, isn’t exactly something you’d like stuffed into the vajayjay if you can help it.

Imagine this: an average women will use 15,000 tampons over the course of her life. That’s a lot of chemicals thrown in the mix.

Lola’s tampons are made of 100% hypoallergenic cotton and are bundled with BPA-free plastic applicators. They contain no chemicals, synthetics, or dyes, and are 100% biodegradable.

To start a subscription/order, you can head over to Lola.com. A single box costs US$10 and contains 18 tampons, or you can order two boxes for US$18. If you’re new to Lola, you can get your first two-box order for just US$9.

There’s an assortment of Light, Regular or Super which you can adjust anytime at no additional cost. You can set a frequency of monthly or bi-monthly, or you can also skip at any time.

Too bad it’s only available in the US right now. Perhaps a Malaysian startup can adopt the idea?
