Do you believe in magic? Celcom wants you to never let go of its Magic SIM

Magic SIM

If you’ve been wondering why Twitter and Facebook have been abuzz with a certain #MagicSIM last week, all was revealed to the media today. If you’ve never believed in magic, perhaps you will now, at least that’s what Celcom hopes you do. The intriguingly named Magic SIM is Xpax’s latest limited edition prepaid offering and it will be available starting tomorrow.

The Magic SIM boasts to give more free internet than any other telco in the market.

In his energetic presentation, Zalman Aefendy Zainal Abidin, Chief Marketing and Sales Officer, Celcom Axiata Berhad said the Magic SIM exemplifies Celcom’s goal of becoming the Internet Champion and ensuring that every level of society is connected to lightning-fast 4G LTE speeds in Celcom territory’s network.

The SIM that gives you more internet

Magic SIM offers FREE basic internet, FREE high speed internet and FREE call and SMS, as well as subscription plans from as low as RM1/day. A Magic SIM starter pack costs just RM5. Free basic internet is capped at 64kbps. The starter pack will include RM3 preloaded airtime, with a 5-day validity before requiring a reload.

While subscribers will have access to Celcom’s 4G LTE network, with speeds of up to 75MBps, Zalman was quick to note that Magic SIM is about access to basic connectivity first, before connection speed.

Say goodbye to pay per use

With free basic internet, you’ll get unlimited messaging with WhatsApp, WeChat and Line. With free high speed internet (200MB), you’ll get access to Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. Lastly, you’ll get 20mins of free calls and 20 SMS to friends on Celcom.

In terms of reloads, it costs just RM1/day and can be purchased in denominations of RM5, RM10 and RM30 offering 50MB, 100MB and 300MB high speed internet respectively. If you just want free basic internet without topping up, you just have to make sure you have credit to auto-topup at RM1/day.

Magic SIM

For heavy data users like me, Magic SIM offers Magic Box (a box full of surprises!) that offers daily, weekly and monthly bundles. Daily bundles start from RM1/day for 30MB with 5 minutes talktime and 5 SMS, all the way up to a monthly RM58 plan that bundles 4GB data, 150 mins talktime and 150 SMS.

Call rates are offered at 12sen/minute to all networks.

Zalman also introduced Magic Miracles as part of the Magic SIM experience, that brings subscribers little surprises each month.

Let’s experience magic

To get on the Magic SIM bandwagon, all you need to do is grab a Magic SIM pack for RM5 at stores starting tomorrow. You can also port from any network via MNP. If you’re an existing XPAX user, you can switch over by sending “MAGIC” to 28882 via SMS.

Initial impressions

Magic SIM looks like an aggressive move to capture market share in the prepaid pie currently dominated by Maxis and Digi. Celcom targets to double daily active users from its current prepaid customers. Based on plans and data plans offered, Magic SIM seems like a Hotlink/U Mobile prepaid hybrid that should appeal to light and heavy data users alike.

I’ll be putting the Magic SIM to the test soon.

So what do you think? Do you believe in magic?
