In a leaked internal document, Microsoft is planning to phase out the use of the ‘Nokia’ and ‘Windows Phone’ brands, in favour of simply ‘Lumia’ and ‘Windows.’

There has been visible clues where the dropping of the Nokia name is concerned. We’ve noticed the Nokia take a back seat in product launches and product literature of late. Instead Microsoft has been pushing Lumia as the main product brand name, and Microsoft Mobile Devices as the overall entity.

The dropping of the Windows Phone moniker is a little bit of a surprise though, as Microsoft plans to just stick to ‘Windows.’ No longer any differentiator between desktop and smartphone OS now.

Change are set to take affect during the upcoming holiday campaign for its phone portfolio.

“As part of our phased transition, we will drop the manufacturer name from product references during the Holiday campaign,” the document reads.

In a surprise move, Microsoft acquired Nokia’s device and services business in September 2013 for a whopping US$7.2 billion.

The acquisition has not bore much fruit thus far, with Windows Phone OS market share lingering below 3% globally. Microsoft is however, putting its weight behind its mobile business and we may yet see some surprises in the coming months.
