Microsoft Devices Group has revealed the new Lumia 830 and Lumia 735 in Malaysia. The two mid-range devices run the latest Windows Phone 8.1 release and integrate industry-leading imaging technology at affordable prices.

Lumia 830

Hot on the heels of the Lumia 930, the Lumia 830 features a similar premium-looking, slim design with a metal band – a new design language for the mid- to high-end Lumia devices. Measuring just 8.5mm at its thinnest, and weighing 150g, the Lumia 830 packs flagship Lumia innovations – wireless charging , Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), PureView with Zeiss optics and 4G LTE Cat 3 (up to 50Mbps).

It features the famed 10MP PureView camera with Zeiss optics, offering Rich Recording, high-quality images and videos and the thinnest OIS system to date on a Lumia.

It also brings the best of Microsoft apps and services – Microsoft Office Mobile, Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim update, and OneDrive with 15GB of free cloud storage.

The Lumia 830 sports a 1.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 (MSM8926), 1GB RAM, 16GB storage with microSD expandability (up to 128GB), a 5-inch HD display protected with Gorilla Glass 3, Curved Glass (2.25D) and a 2200mAh battery.

The Lumia 735 is Microsoft’s purpose-built selfie camera phone – boasting a front-facing, wide-angle 5MP camera that’s perfect for selfies and Skype video calls. The primary camera is a 6.7MP Zeiss, f/1.9 with LED flash.

The new Lumia Selfie app enables you to also use the primary camera for selfies. It includes face detection and audible notification to frame your selfies more accurately. Pretty neat.

Design-wise, it’s signature Lumia with its interchangeable polycarbonate covers that supports wireless charging.

Like the Lumia 830, it also packs a 1.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400, 1GB RAM, but less storage of 8GB (expandable up to 128GB via microSD). 15GB OneDrive cloud storage comes free.

The 4.7-inch HD OLED (316PPI) display features curved glass (2.25D) and comes with ClearBlack and SuperSensitive Touch technology.

The Lumia 735 comes with 4G LTE Cat3 and also packs NFC, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, BT 4.0 LE, micro-USB and nano-SIM. The removable battery is rated at 2200mAh.

Pricing and availability

The Lumia 830 and Lumia 735 will be available from 3 October 2014 at RM1,399 (US$429) and RM999 (US$306) respectively. The Lumia 830 and Lumia 735 will be available in bright orange, bright green, black and white.

Golden Screen Cinemas app, now on Windows Phone

In conjunction with the two Lumia phones, Microsoft Devices and Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) revealed the GSC app for Windows Phone 8.1. Windows Phone users can now book movie tickets and manage their bookings with ease.

  • The app introduces some brand new features:
  • Payment through credit cards
  • Showtimes listings
  • Booking information on Live Tiles
  • Option of using Movie posters as lock screen image
  • Mobile wallet integration
  • Updates in notification centre
  • Voice recognition enabled search for ticket booking

The GSC Mobile app will be available in October via Windows Phone Store.

Initial impressions

I like the new design language of the higher end Lumia devices with the metal band and more premium look and feel. The Lumia 830 despite being a mid-range Lumia, feels more expensive than it actually is. Despite its seemingly lack of RAM, it runs fluid and fast. The camera is excellent.

The selfie-centric Lumia 735 is great at what it does. Selfies with the front camera are super sharp. Rather impressed with the front camera frankly. Megapixels isn’t everthing, as you may have experienced with higher rated cameras like the Oppo N1 or Huawei Ascend P7.
