Well, this should silence the critics. Apple’s new bigger iPhones are already selling at twice the pace of the iPhone 5 in 2012. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus moved four million units in just 24 hours.

Despite initial hiccups with the Apple Online Store on 12 September, demand has far outstripped supply. Apple says a significant number of customers should receive their phones starting Friday, 19 September. However, many may have to wait until October before they get their hands on theirs.

Apple has set a certain quantity for its physical Apple Stores, in order for walk-in customers to have a chance to grab their units on 19 September.

It seems like there’s a huge pent up demand for a bigger iPhone, with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus “flying off the shelves.”

Do keep in mind that pre-orders cover only the first tier of 10 countries. The second tier of countries to receive the new iPhone 6 includes Austria, Belgium , Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Apple is set to make the new iPhone 6 available in 115 countries by year end.

What’s unclear is why China is not on the list of countries on the first tier and not even on the second, unlike last year. China is a tremendously important country for Apple. Speculations point to China regulators who have not given approval for the device.

Some analysts project sales of 90 million iPhones or more by the end of this year.

Last year, the iPhone 5s and 5c sold nine million units in the opening weekend, breaking Apple’s all-time iPhone sales records.
