[Review] Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850: Perfect mouse on-the-go

Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850

Accompanying the All-in-One Media Keyboard that was reviewed yesterday, is Microsoft‘s light-on-the-pocket Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850. Made to complement your notebook or tablet or 2-in-1 (a Surface 2 perhaps?), the mouse comes with a nano transceiver that can be conveniently stored in the mouse itself.

Design and build

The mouse is smaller than a regular sized mouse, measuring 58.1 x 100mm and at just 90g, is light to boot. Naturally, since it’s purposed for usage on the go, it doesn’t add too much weight to your bag together with your notebook or tablet.

Mine came in Pantone Purple, matching my Surface 2. Other colours available include Flame Red, Orchid Pink, Wool Blue and Coal Black. The material build is well put together, and it doesn’t at all feel cheap despite its low price tag.

What’s cool is that it has an ambidextrous design, made to be comfortable whether you’re left or right handed. The left and right buttons have good, assuring tactile feel and the built-in scroll wheel helps with smooth, easy navigation.

When you need to transport it about, the bottom carriage where the AA battery is stored also features a compartment for the nano transceiver. Very neat. So no risk of losing the transceiver, unless you lose the mouse of course.

Performance

The mouse works with Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 7 and for the Mac fans – OS X 10.7.x – 10.9.x. In terms of wireless range, the mouse supports up to 5m, over 2.4Ghz.

The compact size may need slightly getting used to, as with its feather weight. However, once you’ve gotten used to it, the mouse works as well as any other regular mouse. Input is accurate and response overall is good.

As with most if not all Microsoft peripherals that require batteries, the AA alkaline battery comes included in the box. Battery life is claimed to be six months, which is great by any measure.

Overall, a truly plug-and-play experience, and the mouse performs as expected.

Verdict

There isn’t much to think about is it? If you’re on the move a lot and need an extra input device for your notebook and tablet, the Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850 may be your best bet. Highly affordable, live-wire and perfect whether you’re right- or left-handed, there’s little to fault aside from needing to get used to its size and lightness.
