OCZ Technology Group, Inc (“OCZ”) has filed for bankruptcy. The leading provider of high-performance solid state drives (SSDs) announced the move on November 25, 2013.

The company has received an offer from Toshiba Corporation to acquire all of its assets.

Hercules Technology Growth Capital, Inc (“Hercules”) has taken exclusive control of the company’s depository accounts in several bank facilities.

OCZ currently has engineering teams in California, South Korea and Great Britain.

It is indeed sad to see OCZ go bust as they are considered one of the pioneers in bringing SSDs to the masses. Several of our Macs in the office use OCZ Vertex 4 SSDs and they’ve been good, reliable performers.

Competition is of course rife, with bigger vendors like Intel, Samsung and WD jumping into the fray in a big way. With the future looking very SSD-skewed, it is a loss to see one of the pioneers no longer in the scene.

OCZ’s Indilinx Barefoot controller is mainstay in many product lines including products from Corsair, Crucial and Mushkin. The ARM-based SATA controller is used in high performance SSDs, with TRIM support available for almost all drives.

Let’s hope Toshiba adopts some of the acquired tech in its future products.
