Apple Acquires Video Search Startup Matcha

Matcha

Matcha

Before you wonder why Apple has bought into the Japanese ice-cream company, hear us out. Matcha is a video search and recommendation service previously available as an iOS app. It shut its service in May.

The app allowed users to get an overview of everything that was available on cable TV networks and video-streaming services including from Netflix, Comcast and HuluMatcha also allows users to manage a queue of things to watch, receive personalised recommendations for show and connect to friends via social networks.

It is believed that Apple paid somewhere between US$1 to $1.5 million for the defunct service.

Could technologies acquired from Matcha be integrated to Apple’s rumoured Apple TV or be part of the iTunes feature set?

Matcha is the latest in Apple’s acquisitions, the other most recent being Passif Semiconductor in early August, and map services Locationary and HopStop.com in July.
