In a closed session with selected media recently, Sourcefire, Inc., announced and launched its latest FirePOWER network security appliance in Malaysia. FirePOWER helps to significantly protect businesses from sophisticated malware threats, advanced persistent threats (APTs) and targeted attacks.

In today’s IT environment, organisations can no longer hold a passive, reactionary stance against security threats. Taking proactive measures by deploying security appliances like FirePOWER mitigates the impact of sophisticated malware than can quickly cripple a network.

In a recent MyCERT report, there were over 1,000,000 malware attacks in 2011 alone.

The all-new FIREPOWER appliance not only protects a network, but provides visibility and control of threats on the network – from point of entry, propagation and post-infection remediation. It is Sourcefire’s first big data-based network security appliance.

Three new models of the FirePOWER appliances include FirePOWER 7010 (50 Mbps), FirePOWER 7020 (100 Mbps) and the FirePOWER 7030 (250 Mbps) were introduced. The entry level FirePOWER 7010 is targeted at SMEs, while higher up the range, there is also a 40+Gbps device, targeted at telcos.

Together with the launch of the new FirePOWER range, the latest Sourcefire 5.1.1 software was also released to provide the foundation  to strengthen the solution.

The latest FirePOWER appliance family comprises Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention Systems (NGIPS), application control, Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) models, and advanced malware protection under one universal security platform to support the industries’ evolving security needs.

With built-in big data analytics, Sourcefire’s solution delivers continuous file analysis and retrospective alerting to notify users of malicious files. It provides similar protection for devices, enabling visibility into malware trajectory, and rapid cleanup to avoid re-infection. In comparison, a typical analysis covers only 50%.

FireAMP in tandem with FirePOWER devices supports Windows and Windows 7. Windows 8 support is coming soon.

With FireAMP Mobile, which is available on the Android platform, advanced malware protection is also available on mobile devices.

For Malaysia, both advanced malware protection for FirePOWER and 5.1.1 are available now. The new FirePOWER 7000 series appliance will be available in Q1 2013.
