P1 CEO Michael Lai launches ONE 69 Plan & Lagi Potong Stim campaign

Malaysia’s first and leading 4G wireless broadband provider and one with the biggest sense of humour – Packet One Network (Malaysia) Sdn.Bhd. (“P1”), has launched a brand new campaign called “Lagi Potong Stim!”, in line with the introduction of a new P1 4G One 69 Plan. This is an additional plan to complement their three existing ONE Plan offerings. P1 launched the ONE Plan earlier in July, but today added this extra plan to make quality 4G broadband at home and on-the-go even more affordable. What’s also interesting is this plan comes with a money-back guarantee, the only provider in Malaysia to offer this.

The smiliest guy in tech – Michael Lai, CEO of P1 said, “We are so sure that our new ONE 69 Plan is the absolute best value in the market at the time of launch on 15 September that we’ll give our customers their money back if they can find a better broadband bundle plan in Malaysia!”

The ONE Plan is a one-of-a-kind 3-in-1 value;  two modems – the P1 4G home modem (DV230) with WiFi and the nifty P1 4G on-the-go modem (UH235 aka “Super Wiggy”) – and voice. As a special introductory offer, subscribers to the ONE 69 plan will only pay RM49 a month for the first three months. The ONE 69 Plan provides speeds of 1Mbps for both modems and a shared quota of 3GB. This includes 100 minutes of free voice calls to local fixed and mobile numbers and IDD calls to 10 popular destinations including Singapore, China and Hong Kong.

Research has shown that 93% of broadband users in Malaysia compromised their broadband experience by using their mobile dongles at home and, as a result, were often frustrated with their broadband services. I, for one, am part of that statistic. Although I’m mobile quite a fair bit of the time, there is considerable time spent at home (especially at night), requiring a broadband connection. I currently have neither a landline nor a static, wired broadband connection at home. The fact here is this – mobile dongles are optimised for outdoor, mobile use. Having a smaller antenna means non-optimal performance, especially testing if the signal has to go through layers of walls inside the home. When we’re indoors, we need a device that has a bigger antenna and connected to a higher voltage power source to ensure stronger signal strength.

It was through this research (Frost & Sullivan) that P1 originally came up with the idea of the ONE plan. Lai explained that customers were also compromising their broadband experience by using dongles due to limited usage quotas on mobile broadband plans – meant for light surfing, emails and social networking. Also, using a mobile dongle means your inability to share your connection with others (not directly anyways). WiFi-enabled devices like the iPad, PSP and others would not be able to share the connection. Crippling, would be an understatement. In a nutshell, P1 is promoting the use of the right modem for the right environment. Makes perfect sense, really.

An important thing to note is that having the ONE plan is also incredibly convenient. Two devices, one account, one bill. I have been testing the ONE plan (169 Plan with 5Mbps connection) with the DX230 Home modem and the excellent Super Wiggy for a month. I’ll be posting findings on performance and my overall experience with P1 4G soon.

My take on this new plan by P1? Looks like it’s targeted at those who are on a budget, and are currently using their mobile phones (tethering) or broadband dongles for their broadband requirements. The low entry fee plus the optimised broadband experience with the two modems and voice could just be what some out there need.

For now, access your current broadband set-up. Potong Stim or not?
