While still playing catch-up with app leaders namely Apple‘s iOS and Google‘s Android OS, Microsoft Windows Phone 7 app numbers have hit a milestone of 25,000 in its Marketplace. Over 10,000 were accrued over the past 3 months alone. Microsoft currently has a growing pool of developers for WP7 – 7,000 to be exact. Over 50 percent of total apps are free apps, with 32 percent paid and the balance are trial versions.

WP7, Microsoft’s reboot of its mobile OS, continues to grow and doubled its market share in the overall smartphone market up to June 2011. This, however, only represents 2 percent of market, lagging behind even once market leader, Symbian.

With the much-anticipated Windows Phone 7.5 update codenamed “Mango” expected to be released at the end of the year, coupled with its partnership with Nokia, Microsoft is looking at a big swing of things. In their way, that is.

Mango will be a major update that plugs gaping holes in the current OS and will introduce over 500 new features. I can only describe WP7 as “late to the game but has plenty of real potential”. I personally cannot wait for Mango and am tempted to install Beta 2 on my LG Optimus 7. I’ve been using WP7 as a primary phone for 3 months and I love it. Mango will be bringing multitasking (with task switcher), tighter social integration, turn-by-turn navigation, third party support for live tiles, custom ringtones and much more.

A Windows Phone revival is looming. The journey’s just begun.
