In just one day, over one million users purchased and downloaded Apple‘s latest operating system update – Mac OS X Lion (v10.7). Made available exclusively as a digital download for the first time ever, via the Mac App Store for $29.99, users rushed to download the latest release and the adoption rate is reportedly the fastest in Apple’s history. The 4GB download takes approximately 30 minutes to download depending on internet connection, although some users have experienced delay and slow speeds, possibly due to server overloads.
“Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Lion is a huge step forward, it’s not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made.”
Lion introduces more than 250 new features to the Mac, including Multi-Touch® gestures; system-wide support for full screen apps; Mission Control, an innovative view of everything running on your Mac; the Mac App Store, the best place to find and explore great software; Launchpad, a new home for all your apps; and a completely redesigned Mail app.

According to a recent Gartner’s report, Apple currently moved to third place in the U.S. PC market, up from fifth place a year ago and even as recently as last quarter, grabbing a 10.7% share, up significantly from an 8.5% share in the prior-year quarter. This is also where shipments of PCs in the U.S. actually declined year-over-year by about 4-6%. Apple is enjoying a very rosy and record-breaking year, and appears to be continuing to make up ground on the rest of the industry.
