RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook Preview This Friday

Announced last September, Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry PlayBook will be reaching Malaysian shores tomorrow (finally!). The much-anticipated and delayed 7-inch tablet is RIM’s ambitious foray into the increasingly crowded tablet market. With its slick QNX-powered OS, 1Ghz dual-core processor which supports symmetric multi-tasking, the PlayBook looks mighty impressive on paper. I, personally think that it’s probably one of the best specced tablets out there, complemented by its intuitive UI.

Weighing at a scant 400g, RIM decided on a 7-inch form factor with a 1024 x 600 resolution, more Samsung Galaxy Tab than iPad. The display uses WSVGA rather than IPS (as seen on the iPad), so may not be as sharp nor brilliant. But I’ll give it a spin around when I get my hands on it.

For the uninitiated, here are some specs at a glance.

  • 7″ LCD, 1024 x 600, WSVGA, capacitive touch screen with full multi-touch and gesture support
  • BlackBerry Tablet OS with support for symmetric multiprocessing
  • 1 GHz dual-core processor (Cortex A9 Processor), with GPU
  • 1 GB RAM
  • Memory: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions to be available
  • 5300mAh battery – 8 hour battery life
  • Dual HD cameras (3 MP front facing, 5 MP rear facing), supports 1080p HD video recording
  • Video playback: 1080p HD Video, H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV
  • Audio playback: MP3, AAC, WMA
  • HDMI video output
  • Wi-Fi – 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Connectors: microHDMI, microUSB, charging contacts
  • Open, flexible application platform with support for WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, Java
  • Measures 130mm x 193mm x 10mm
  • Weighs approx. 400g

Personally, I think the PlayBook is the next best thing since…well, the iPad! Can’t wait to hold and fiddle it with my own hands tomorrow. Is it the ultimate 7-incher that satisfies? *ahem* Watch this space!
